MLO 4: Research and Technology
4.1 Students become familiar with appropriate research methodologies and are able to apply such in their studies.
4.2 Students will use appropriate technologies in research and studies relative to Japanese language and culture.
4.3 Students will collect, manage and analyze current and emerging technology-based resources to develop and produce their scholarly work.
I was lucky in that my teachers did everything they could to help me succeed, including finding ways to teach the most up-to-date research methods they could find. The best and most obvious example I have to show the success of these lessons is my Senior Capstone project, which required months of literature review, concept mapping, surveying, and data analysis.
Both JAPN 403 and JAPN404 were aimed at giving us a set time during the week to work on our research projects, while learning exactly what steps we needed to take to complete them.
In JAPN403, our teacher broke down the process of building a capstone into three parts: the Title, the Research Questions, and the Survey questions. Once we had those topics and keywords determined, we learned how to find proper research materials, such as scholarly articles and books, and how to determine if they held the information we were looking for. At least three times during my time at CSUMB, we met with our Major Librarian, and learned how to use the library database to our advantage to find the articles that applied exactly to what we were looking for. Our library database opened the way to several other incredibly helpful websites that specialized in articles related to language learning, Japanese culture, and everything in between. Along with the helpful research databases, our Major Librarian would regularly share up-to-date technology that would help us keep track of our research and organize our project. To help us with keeping a list of our sources, she introduced Zotero, and we quickly became proficient in saving articles and returning to our accounts for reference. To help us keep our thoughts organized as we researched and found answers to our questions, she introduced Coggle, a concept mapping website that allowed us to build and connect thoughts and ideas we could later relate to our papers.
In JAPN404, our teacher aimed us specifically at learning how to write a Japanese research paper. Each week, we covered a new step in the process, such as building sentences around quotations and paraphrases, to the correct terminology to use during the data analysis portion. All of the lessons applied directly when it came time to write our paper and script for our Capstone.
Classes that fulfill this MLO:
JAPN403: Pre-Capstone
JAPN404: Adv. Japanese for Presentational Communication
